Photography

Every year, The George Gund Foundation commissions a fine art photographer to shine light on an aspect of the Foundation's priorities and areas of interest.

These artists have captured insights into our longstanding commitment to public education, the revitalization of Cleveland’s neighborhoods, the richness of our city’s vast arts and culture, the importance of urban gardens, the health of our residents, and many other issues. Early commissions were featured in the Foundation’s annual reports, and the first 12 years of photographs were compiled in a book, A City Seen, for the Foundation’s celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2002. More recently, the Foundation has produced digital copies of the commission for our website as well as a printed selection of photographs to display in our office. Taken together, the photographs capture compelling images of people, places, and the remarkable work being accomplished by the Foundation’s partners within the greater Cleveland community.

Our current commission, Bridges, by photographer Kristine Potter, is highlighted here. Archived commissions, along with introductory letters from the artist and the Foundation’s board chair and president, can be found below.”

Bridges

Known for projects that trace the shifting intersection of landscape, history, and cultural identity, Kristine Potter turned her lens on Cleveland’s bridges — structures that reveal both the weight of civic ambition and the quiet persistence of new life around them. Attuned to both critique and possibility, Potter’s images reflect her broader practice of uncovering layered narratives within the American landscape.
